Pelléas and Mélisande
Pelléas and Mélisande
Perchance there walked a knight
Even-tide, in a garden of rain;
Love, bruised and mute, broke free,
Lost within a lake of pain.
Eternal was the theme they wove,
And their fate was dark as night;
Still, the lovers walked free, within the forest grove.

Above, the birds fell silent,
Nervous of the approaching storm;
Doom dripped from clouds formed when love was born.

Mercy, she begged from her lover,
Even as she left him for dead;
Lost in a forest of streams,
Injured and brought to the marriage-bed.
Stars dancing on water,
And gold vanished in wells;
Never to sit on the finger,
Doom rang like a bell;
Even-tide, in a garden of rain.
